An antique figure for a republican institution

Identity proposal for the Conseil supérieur de la magistrature,
the body that guarantees the independence of the French judiciary.
Produced in collaboration with agency La Netscouade.

Approach

The starting point is a shift. The former identity placed a Marianne in bas-relief above the name, framed by two rules. Marianne is the figure of the Republic, not the figure of Justice.
The work therefore focuses on the figure itself, reaching further back to the antique representation of Justice, the one that predates political regimes and suits an institution charged with guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary. The right-facing profile is kept, and the rules stay on either side. Two versions follow: a square one that reprises the original arrangement, and a circular cartouche that turns the rules into blue and red arcs.
Two materials carry the argument. Marble, which speaks of what endures and cannot be corrected. The burin, the register of banknotes, stamps and certificates, of what holds good because it is hard to counterfeit. The hatching also changes status with scale: at a distance it disappears into the expression, up close it reveals itself as a guilloche (the fine web of lines found on banknotes and certificates), readable as an image from afar and as workmanship in detail. But stone alone would be cold: a few curls are left loose, so the figure keeps something human.

Position

An indeterminate age, neither that of youth nor that of authority earned through years. The eyes are not blindfolded: the blindfold is not antique, it appears in the Renaissance, and at first as a jibe at the judge who sees nothing. The original figure looks out, with a level gaze set on the horizon. The head is carried in the same direction, and the slight low-angle view gives the subject the elevation the institution's name calls for.
An institution that guarantees the independence of justice is better served by a figure than by its name alone.

Execution

AI was used to source and frame the reference profiles, and to produce modelling studies. The face was then composed piece by piece in Photoshop, from those studies and from fragments of statuary: light and curves matched across sources, the bridge of the nose and the line of the mouth redrawn, the hair entirely rebuilt through duplication and additions. The hatching, constructed in Illustrator, was laid over the modelling to give the feel of a burin engraving.
